  WELCOME HOME

willpowerhq.com is live

A new home for category-defining brands. We rebuilt the site from scratch, sharper positioning, the brand community front and center. Welcome in :)

From the Desk
01/ 05

A quick word before we dig in.

There's a version of this community that's a list. A directory. A conference where you scan badges and forget who you met by Tuesday. That version is everywhere. We killed it.

Willpower is something different, and this issue is us saying it out loud for the first time with a straight face. Category-defining isn't a revenue number. It's not a raise. It's a founder who looked at their market and broke the way it worked. Over JUST the last 6months... I've been blown away with the caliber of leaders and founders making a massive dent in the industry.

Category defining baby. The brands that people actually talk about and want to win. IT FIRES ME UP!!

The home is finally here

willpowerhq.com went live this week. Why ? Well... after going through a few designers for our wellness house landing page... I tinkered with Lovable and realized I could make MUCH more progress for something quick if I just did it myself lol (and spending more on credits than I care to admit).

Welcome Claude Code to the chat. Spent a rainy Sunday in Austin locked away in the WillpowerHQ and was amazed how much I could get done in such a short time.

Spoiler alert... The newsletter you're reading is part of that. New design, more curated, You should feel like you're getting one editorial point of view, and highlights of the killers that YOU know, locally, in the Willpower ecosystem. Some great highlights across: TIES, Yerba Madre, Huckberry, etc.

Any big news that you want to share, feel free to email me if you want it included in the next batch. Will try to keep this weekly - but we want to be consistent in sharing what is happening with your favorite founders/leaders.

What's coming May 20

We are BACK in NYC. Two weeks from today we're at Remedy Place in NYC. Catalyst Series, Wellness Lounge format. Intimate room, single panel, real recovery and wellness experiences from the hottest venue in the big apple. Time to get slapped with Wellness... at the Wellness Lounge. Contrast, Redlight, IV Drips, Massages, Cryotherapy, Wellness Care Packages, etc.

If you're a founder or operator at a brand the rest of the room would lean in to hear from, you're invited to apply (or forward to your friends). Doors close when they close, and we are reviewing applications. Flyer's below.

This week's thesis

In-person is the moat.

Three years of running Willpower has taught me one thing: digital reach/performance marketing is a commodity, the room isn't. The brands that win next aren't the ones with the loudest website or the best paid funnel. They're the ones whose founder is at the dinner, in the run club, on the panel, at the event, sending the deck before it's public.

The website is the front door. The room is the moat. May 20 in NYC is one room. Pick the rooms you'll be in this year.. and be intentional about it.

What's Happening
02/ 05

Three signals from the wellness frontier.

Not every headline. The three I'd actually bring up at dinner.

HiringYerba MadreMay 4

Yerba Madre hires Jimmy DeCicco as SVP of Revenue Growth

Yerba Madre brought on Jimmy DeCicco as SVP of Revenue Growth. For context: Jimmy is a Super Coffee co-founder. He built that brand from nothing into Whole Foods, Costco, every gas station in America. Now he's at Yerba Madre, a brand most people haven't heard of yet but probably will this year. Yerba's been quietly stocking shelves while everyone else fights over functional soda and hop water. The hire signal: when an operator who has actually scaled a beverage brand to nine figures joins your growth team, you're not in experimentation mode anymore. You're in build mode. Watch the next 12 months. Yerba Madre is going to be in a lot more hands.

The take

Jimmy spoke at our marquee Catalyst event in Austin last year. Mic Drop Moments. Real builder & incredible athlete. Massive hire for Yerba Madre.

Brand activationPumaApr 26

Puma turned the night before the London Marathon into a reverse marathon. 1,000+ runners showed up.

Puma's marquee shoe moment for marathon weekend wasn't on race day. It was 12 hours before, at midnight, running the route backwards with a thousand+ people in tow. No sponsorship fee. No paid placement at the finish line. Just a free venue (the city), a free format (a fun run), and Puma branding on every doorstep along the route. Best brand activation of the season and it cost a fraction of what Adidas paid for their official Sub-2 stunt the next morning. The lesson for any operator: showing up where your audience already is, in a format your audience already wants, beats showing up where the camera already is. Brand-as-event > brand-as-billboard.

The take

Free media is a function of being early to a room nobody else is in yet. Puma was. Adidas wasn't.This is what it looks like to show UP for your community, and create moments that matter.

Huckberry's full rebrand drops: sharper positioning for outdoor-meets-lifestyle

Huckberry sharpened its identity at the outdoor-meets-lifestyle crossover. For operators watching category clarity vs. category sprawl, this is a live case study. They paired the rebrand drop with a Nike x LDV sneaker relaunch documentary, brand-as-publisher in action. Huckberry has been a direct Willpower community partner over the last year and we are PUMPED to see them heading to the next level

The take

When a brand that's been distinct for a decade doubles down on its lane instead of widening it, take notes ;) I love these guys... and what they are doing on storytelling and long form media is a masterclass

BrandCELZOMay 6

CELZO drops a packaging refresh. Wellness House alumni level up the shelf

CELZO, who appeared at Wellness House and sold out within the first hour of the day, announced a packaging refresh. Shelf presence is underrated in CPG scaling. Packaging redesigns at the right moment signal brand maturity to retail buyers, and CELZO has the product to back it up.

The take

The redesign isn't vanity. It's the move you make right before a Whole Foods buyer takes you seriously and you blow up. The FEEL GOOD FIESTA is here and my hips don't lie

RetailRhoneMay 5

Rhone's unified commerce media strategy accelerated growth. Here's the structure

Rhone published a detailed case study on how a unified commerce media strategy drove growth. Rare: an operator actually sharing the playbook. For DTC brands trying to make paid, owned, and retail work together without bleeding margin, this is worth 20 minutes of your time.

The take

Most brands don't share their playbook because it's not actually working. Rhone's is. That's why they're sharing.

World's Toughest Mile: Eric Hinman's masterclass in doing hard things and building real relationships

Eric Hinman hosted World's Toughest Mile in April. Track meet meets gauntlet: 400m Burpee Broad Jump, 400m Lunges, 400m Bear Crawl (fuuuuuuck) and 400m run (easiest part), all under the clock. Best example I've seen this year of two things compounding at the same time: doing hard things in public and building relationships that last past the finish line. I came across in my Willpower Spurs jersey (yes, I had to). The room of athletes, builders, and brands that showed up was the actual product. The mile was the excuse. Epic event, Epic moments and an epic 4 days of soreness...

The take

Founders who host hard things get the right people in the room. The race is the bait. The community is the moat. Eric shows us what a masterclass in that really is. Daddy's home.

The member brand I can't stop talking about.

TIES

TIES

Men contribute to 50% of every fertility journey, yet the category has been built almost entirely around women. TIES exists to change that, giving men a proactive, clinically backed option built to actually engage them in their own preconception health.

LN
Luke Novak, Co-Founder & Co-CEO
The take

Luke has been a big supporter of Willpower and SHARP in the CPG space. Closed a $1.5M seed from HumanCo (Jason Karp on the board) and built the formulation with reproductive specialists.

What I like about this: men contribute to half the fertility journey and nobody is talking to them. Luke is. Worth a look if fatherhood is on your radar, or if you're studying how a founder builds a wedge into a category nobody is serving.

We had a Protein wave, now its a fiber/GLP-1 wave... are we on to the Fertility wave next ?

Mental health & therapy was difficult to talk about 10-20 years ago. Now, post pandemic, we have normalized talking about our feelings to peers and de-stigmatized therapy.

Is fertility health awareness the next mental health?

Normatec Elite boots are EPIC for recovering after big race days. Hyrox, leg day, or after Eric Hinman puts me through a workout, these are what I reach for. The compression is no joke.

Super Coffee Protein+

I'm not huge on coffee... But damn i feel like a coffee addict with this. I get my protein fix little caffeine boost that put me over the edge. I wake up and its the first thing i grab. There is now no excuse to not get enough protein.

MagnaMagnesium + electrolytes

Met Mike (the founder) at World's Toughest Mile. The product tastes amazing. I needed more magnesium in my diet, combining it with electrolytes in one drink? Game changer.

If you're in NYC, May 20 at Remedy Place is one. If not, look at your calendar. The next 6 months: 3 dinners, 2 panels, 1 retreat. The brands you want to be in 18 months are the ones whose founders are in the rooms you keep skipping.
